EPMA invites you to a dual workshop facilitated by Jamillah Hinson, curator, and Celia C. Peters, filmmaker representing The Center for Afrofuturist Studies (CAS).

In this dual workshop, explore Black American forms of storytelling from the narrative to the conceptual. Through interactive workshops, participants will investigate and illustrate their stories through collage, assemblage, and filmmaking, mediums historically used in Black American art.

VISION AND SOUND: Black Women in Art Edition

• A Creative Workshop by Jamillah Hinson

Utilizing the exhibition, There Is a Woman in Every Color: Black Women in Art, as a jumping-off point, participants will explore traditional Black American art forms, in particular collage and assemblage, to create narrative pieces that merge personal stories into communal ones. Working individually and in groups, participants will use found objects and various materials to create intimate works that come together as community tapestries. Jamillah Hinson is an independent curator and arts programmer. With a focus on historical and contemporary Black cultural and artistic traditions as they present themselves through experimental sound, film and photography, and performance, her practice engages various methods of storytelling and centers artistic and community narratives.

STORY IN SONG: Black Women in Art Edition

• A Creative Workshop by Celia C. Peters

This interactive workshop will explore the relationship between storytelling through the prism of music and visual art. Celia is a filmmaker, so her primary reference is cinematic storytelling. The workshop will begin with a brief introduction to traditional cinematic story structure and its function: 3 act structure = beginning, middle, end. Then participants will explore the powerful relationship between music and film. Finally, using Black women in visual and sonic art as inspiration, they will let their inner visionaries run free in exercises designed to create foundations for their own stories — and share what was birthed. This workshop doesn’t require any prior knowledge of screenwriting or filmmaking; the only requirement is your imagination! Celia C. Peters is a filmmaker and artist of the new millennium exploring the horizons of character-driven work featuring compelling stories and authentically diverse characters. She explores narratives rooted in the emotional complexity of the human experience.

The CAS is an artist residency program that reimagines the futures of marginalized people by creating dynamic workspaces for artists of color. They define dynamic as an interactive, supportive, rigorous, inclusive, and community-engaged space. The CAS wants to rethink and challenge art practices that revolve around Black futurity.
