The El Paso Museum of Art proudly presents works crafted by older adult members of the community while participating in free art classes funded by the W. L. & Louise E. Seymour Foundation

For several years, the El Paso Museum of Art has offered free or discounted art classes to older adult members of the local community. These classes provide a means of exploration for participants to delve into the art of painting and creating ceramics while also allowing time in the galleries to seek inspiration. They have also served as a source of joy, therapy, and recreation, bringing together individuals from all lifestyles and forging a sense of community.

Ceramic students learned the foundations of throwing on the pottery wheel and advanced hand-building techniques through the use of newer additions in studio equipment, such as a clay extruder. Students applied those skills to making jars, bowls, and sculptures. Painting students learned advanced techniques in preparation for oil painting, and honed their technique with compositions in landscape and figure paintings.

In addition to teaching artist-led gallery visits and studio time, this past year students were allowed a behind the scenes meeting with International Artist Bordalo II to see the artist at work and see his process of utilizing recycled materials to make large scale murals. All EPMA Art School classes encourage students to embrace new ideas, strengthen critical thinking, and develop their artistic expression.
