Join Elizabeth S. Humphrey, the curator of There is a Woman in Every Color: Black Women in Art for an informal gallery tour and collage workshop.

The workshop will be a collage making activity-using pieces of paper, photographs, fabric and other ephemera. The event will explore the techniques and methodology of noted Black women artists Lorraine O’Grady, Betye Saar, and Kara Walker who are featured in the exhibition and by vanessa german who has a sculpture on view in EPMA’s Contemporary Gallery. O’Grady, Saar, Walker, and german address themes concerning issues of diaspora, Black female subjectivity, race relations, and power imbalances within their work.

Elizabeth S. Humphrey uses material culture and objects to study identity, representation, and marginalized histories in North America. Her research considers North America in a globalized context, with an emphasis on visual culture, material culture, and Blackness. She received her M.A. in American Material Culture from the Winterthur Program at the University of Delaware. Professional experiences include the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Hirshhorn Museum, and the Winterthur Museum. She is currently an Art History Ph.D. student at the University of Delaware, with a concentration in Curatorial Studies and Museum Studies.
